MCAC Annual Conference
Loss Through a ChildÕs Eye
8:00am -4:30 pm
Location:
Westside Community Center
3534 South 108th
Street
Program
Details:
Grief and loss can take many forms and affects each child
differently. This conference will
take a closer look at several common situations leading to grief and loss along
with how to understand and work with youth enduring these losses. First, weÕll be looking at grief and
loss experienced through placement changes in foster care, separation from
biological parents, and children placed outside their home. Then weÕll take a closer look at the
effects of grief on children, what grief responses can look like at different
ages and what determinants afect a childÕs grieving process. Next weÕll focus on how deployment
affects children and the basic therapeutic interventions used to treat common
deployment issues. The grief and
loss experienced by refugee children will be a focus in the afternoon, looking
at the different forms of grief and loss and what we can do to help. Last we will turn our focus to grief
and loss experienced by children and families going though a divorce, along
with creative interventions to correct misperceptions, guide children through
grief and strenghthen parent-child bonds.
This conference will provide a deeper understanding of loss through a
childÕs eyes.

The MCAC
Program Committee sponsors 6 educational programs every year. With a wide variety of topics, the Program Committee searches for
local and national speakers to provide short presentations on issues that face
professionals responsible for protecting the safety of children and ensuring
positive growth and development.
A kickoff
breakfast is held in January, typically with an uplifting and motivational
speaker. This is also an awards breakfast
to celebrate and give recognition to outstanding individuals who have
contributed to the field of child welfare.
An annual
conference is held in August. A
full-day educational program including CEUs is offered. With attendance from a wide variety of
agencies, the annual conference is also an excellent opportunity to network and
gain valuable information about local community efforts.
Four
additional quarterly programs are offered throughout the year, usually
scheduled on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. These programs are held at the Omaha Home for Boys Wurdeman
Learning Center (4343 N 52nd Street), are free and open to the
public regardless of membership status.
These programs meet the criteria for continuing education requirements
for 1.5 hours of mental health, social work and/or counseling practice.
